Adventure of the Astronauts

by Anugerah Muhammad Zulfikar and Muhammad Eraz Zarkasih

One day, NASA astronauts named Scholes and 2 his assistant Nomad and Aztec had a mission to sough the planet which was exactly the same as the Earth.
When the spaceship went to the space, suddenly the meteorite hit the spaceship, the crash did not destroyed the spaceship but it completely destroyed the communication system including the GPS tracker. In that time Scholes said to his assistant “OH my god, we lost contact with NASA”. And after 3 days in the space the fuel of the spaceship was empty. They trapped in the space because they did not have the communication system and GPS suddenly the spaceship pulled down because the gravitation of the unknown planet, the spaceship sucked into the planet.
When the spaceship almost hit the ground, schools and his assistants used the parachute and jumped out from spaceship, the spaceship was completely destroyed but they were still survived and landed safely.
“Hey, you guys, find something that maybe , maybe ah, I don’t know what I’m saying ”. Scholes fell into desperation and then Aztec answered “Hey Scholes, you don’t need sad because of this , Okay. We got to solve this problem, together”  and then Scholes answered “Okay, you guys find something  and I’ll try to send SOS with this SOS signal box”. Scholes tried many times but NASA didn’t gave the respond, and his assistants walked around the planet.
Suddenly the assistants found a Hi-Tech town and then someone approached them and said “What are you doing here?” and when they looked at him, it was an alien! And they scared and said “please don’t kill us!”. And the alien answered “I am not coming to kill you, I am just asking!” and then Aztec said “Alright, alien.., so this is a  Hi-Technology nation, and why you understand my language?” and alien said “Because I have a translation chip in my head, and why you guys come here?” and then the assistant told the alien about their story why they came to the planet, and then they beg to the alien to return them back to the earth with Scholes, but the alien refuse their request, and Nomad said “Why? Alright I’ll give anything that you want!” and the alien said “In this planet nobody ever seen crystal ball! And that’s what I want!”. The alien agreed and Aztec whispered to Nomad “Hey, we don’t have a crystal ball! Do you have it?”, “I don’t have!, easy my friend… I have a plan !” Nomad answered to Aztec.
After that Aztec ran to Scholes and shouted “Scholeeess we gotta back home”. After he arrived at Scholes place. Scholes said “Impossible!” after he saying that the alien with Nomad came to the place and the alien said “there’s no time to ask, hold my hands boys” after they did the alien used the transportation ability and before they disappear, Nomad told to the alien to returned  them to the earth exactly in front of Nomad’s House.
And when they arrived at earth exactly in front of Nomad’s House, the alien reminded his request to Nomad, Nomad said to alien to wait him until he got out from the house to take the crystal balls in his house.
After that Nomad went to his son bedroom and he said “Son, I need your marbles” and his son said “For what dad?” and Nomad said “There’s no time to explain!,  I’ll explain you later, son!” and then son gave the marbles to Nomad, and Nomad ran out to in front of his house.
“So where is my crystal ball” said alien, and Nomad gave the marbles to the alien, and then the alien said “Hmmm.. interesting. Are you sure this is a crystal ball? Ah… whatever it’s very cool, thanks” and then the disappeared in a second, Nomad explain all of his trick, “ So because the alien never seen the crystal ball even his Hi-Tech nation never seen it, so I gave him that marbles”, schools answered “But what if the alien came back and kill you, because that was not the real crystal ball?” Nomad answered it “Yeah, that’s what I’m afraid”. But after a long time the alien didn’t come back to the earth.
The mission was failed because they didn’t find the planet which was same as the earth but the lucky part was they still alive and Nomad did not killed by the alien because he tricked the alien.

Gawai Dayak

Gawai Day or Gawai Dayak is a festival celebrated in Sarawak on 1st  June every years. It is both a religious and social occasion. The word Gawai means a ritual or festival. Gawai Dayak literally means "Dayak Festival". Dayak would visit their friends and relatives on this day. Such visit is more commonly known as "ngabang" in the Iban language. Those too far away to visit would receive greeting cards.
The mode of celebration varies from place to place. Preparation starts early. Tuak (rice wine) is brewed (at least one month before the celebration) and traditional delicacies like penganan (cakes from rice flour, sugar and coconut milk) are prepared. As the big day approaches, everyone will be busy with general cleaning and preparing food and cakes. On Gawai Eve, glutinous rice is steamed in bamboo (ngelulun pulut). In the longhouse, new mats will be laid out on the ruai (an open gallery which runs through the entire length of the longhouse). The walls of most bilik (rooms) and the ruai are decorated with Pua Kumbu (traditional blankets). A visit to clean the graveyard is also conducted and offerings offered to the dead. After the visit it is important to bathe before entering the longhouse to ward off bad luck.
The celebration starts on the evening of 31st May. In most Iban longhouses, it starts with a ceremony called Muai Antu Rua (to cast away the spirit of greed), signifying the non-interference of the spirit of bad luck in the celebration. Two children or men each dragging a chapan (winnowing basket) will pass each family's room. Every family will throw some unwanted article into the basket. The unwanted articles will be tossed to the ground from the end of the longhouse for the spirit of bad luck.
Around 6 pm or as the sun sets, miring (offering ceremony) will take place. Before the ceremony, gendang rayah (ritual music) is performed. The Feast Chief thanks the gods for the good harvest, and asks for guidance, blessings and long life as he waves a cockerel over the offerings. He then sacrifices the cockerel and a little blood is used together with the offerings.
Once the offering ceremony is done, then dinner is served at the ruai. Just before midnight, a procession up and down the ruai seven times called Ngalu Petara (welcoming the spirit gods) is performed. During this procession, a beauty pageant to choose the festival's queen and king (Kumang & Keling Gawai) is sometimes conducted. Meanwhile, drinks, traditional cakes and delicacies are served.
At midnight, the gong is beaten to call the celebrants to attention. The longhouse Chief (tuai rumah) or Festival Chief will lead everyone to drink the Ai Pengayu (normally tuak for long life) and at the same time wish each other "gayu-guru, gerai-nyamai" (long life, health and prosperity). The celebration now turns merrier and less formal. Some will dance to the traditional music played, others will sing the pantun (poems). In urban areas, Dayaks will organise gatherings at community centres or restaurants to celebrate the evening.
Traditionally, when guests arrive at a longhouse, they are given the ai tiki as a welcome. From time to time, guests are served tuak. This would be called nyibur temuai which literally means "watering of guests".
It was first celebrated on 1st June 1965 and became a symbol of unity, aspiration and hope for the Dayak community. Today, it is an integral part of Dayak social life. It is a thanksgiving day marking good harvest and a time to plan for the new farming season or activities ahead.
